The West Virginia Center for Professional Development (WVCPD) has a long history of supporting teachers through the National Board Certification (NBC) process.  Our NBC Support Program is an in-depth professional development opportunity that allows participants to review and better understand the complete National Board Certification standards and process.  WVCPD partners with trained National Board support providers to offer teachers structured and sustained support. This begins in the summer with face-to-face professional development, and continues throughout the NBC process with monthly meetings with peers and/or expert mentors.

Beginning with the 2014-2015 cycle, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) revised the certification process in order to reduce barriers for applicants.  These changes are intended to improve NBC and allow more teachers to pursue certification while maintaining the highest standards of the profession.  The National Board will provide options for educators. While teachers can complete the entire certification process in one year, some may choose to do so over several years if that works better with other demands on a teacher’s time.

NBC Awareness

This session is a prerequisite for the NBC Support Program. Participants must have taken this session during summer 2015, or they must take it this summer in order to take NBC Support.

The one-day NBC Awareness Session will give participants the information needed to make an informed decision about whether National Board Certification is for them.  The session introduces participants to the components of certification, timelines involved, and financial requirements.  Attending this session is a requirement before participating in the 2017-2018 NBC Support Program.  Teachers may choose to attend only the awareness session to decide if National Board Certification is in their future, or they may choose to attend the awareness session then stay for the 2017-2018 National Board Support Program to begin the certification journey.
