Dr. Patricia Styles Kusimo has over 25 years of experience in the field of education.
She is a former classroom teacher, associate professor of mathematics at West Virginia
State University, educational researcher and professional developer. She holds a
bachelor's degree in mathematics from Hampton University, a master's degree in education
from Pepperdine University and a doctoral degree in educational administration from
Texas A&M University.
Dr. Kusimo takes part in state and local efforts to improve the academic achievement
of children in West Virginia. She is one of the founders of MAACK a community-based
group that aims to maximize the achievement of African American and economically
disadvantaged children in Kanawha County schools. In January the Martin Luther King
Commission named MAACK to the Living the Dream Service Organization Honor
Roll. Dr. Kusimo was also one of three co-chairs for Governor Manchin's Education
Transition Team.
As a member of the Governor's Minority Student Strategies Council, Dr. Kusimo has
presented information about the academic achievement of African American children
and economically disadvantaged children to state legislators and senators, community
groups, and the West Virginia Board of Education. Dr. Kusimo conducted the data
analysis for the Governor's Report on Minority Student Achievement in West Virginia.
She is the author and co-author of journal articles and research reports, a frequent
workshop presenter and conference speaker, the recipient of National Science Foundation
grants, and a member of Job Corps Community Council. Dr. Kusimo recently co-authored
a book with AEL about culturally responsive instruction, the type of instruction
that engages all learners.
