Session: National Board Certification Awareness

The West Virginia Center for Professional Development (WVCPD) has a long history of supporting teachers through the National Board Certification process. Our NBC Take One! Program is an in-depth professional development opportunity that allows participants to review and better understand the complete National Board Certification standards and process. WVCPD partners with trained National Board support providers to offer teachers structured and sustained support. This begins in the summer with face-to-face professional development, and continues throughout the NBC process with monthly meetings with peers and/or expert mentors.

Beginning with the 2014-2015 cycle, National Board is revising the certification process in order to reduce barriers for applicants. These changes are intended to improve NBC and allow more teachers to pursue certification while maintaining the highest standards of the profession. The pricing for the process will also be reduced.

The revision will allow certification to be comprised of four components: Content Knowledge, Differentiation in Instruction, Teaching Practice and Learning Environment, and Effective and Reflective Practitioners. The timeline below shows how the components will be released over the next three cycle years.

Entering into certification during the 2014-2015 cycle would mean that completion would not be available until the 2016-2017 cycle. Because only two of the four components will be available during this next cycle year, it would be difficult to develop a complete support structure for the program. Therefore, WVCPD will not offer NBC professional development during the 2014-2015 cycle as it has in the past. The Center is interested in offering one-day information and awareness training to those interested in entering the process in the near future. Those interested in attending this session, should complete the registration below, so that WVCPD staff can contact them with additional details.

The cost for the session is $15 and includes all instruction, materials and lunch.
